Dear Room 112 Families, November 28, 2016 wk 13 issue 13
Unlike November, we have a full 4 weeks of school in December! Students are working hard and lots of exciting things are happening in class, so we will definitely merit the winter break! THIS WEEK IN: WORD STUDY Students started sorting activities throughout the week in their word study notebooks to prepare for their spelling test on Friday. Monday – Regular Sort, Tuesday – Speed Sort, Wednesday – Word Hunt, Thursday – Blind Sort, Friday – Glue Sort & Test. READER’S WORKSHOP This week we will read One Dog Canoe. Students will be exposed to procedural how-to writing with this first mentor text. Students will dig deeper into the text through each reading. We will discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words, identify the setting, characters and story parts in the text. Most importantly, we will discuss character actions and how they affect the story’s outcome. VOCABULARY OF THE WEEK: glide, peer, bound, crew, dew SIGHT WORDS OF THE WEEK: Individualized list in your child’s folder. Please make sure they can read them and spell them correctly for the test. WRITER’S WORKSHOP Students have been learning key pieces to writing a personal narrative. See class stories in Class Dojo for mini-lessons on transition words, strong beginning and end, showing emotion not just telling, and much more. We will begin procedural how-to writing next week. MATH In Math, we are coming to a close on Unit 3. In Unit 4, students will focus on length, addition facts using “doubles” and “helper doubles.” Personally, I enjoy this unit very much. There are many “Aha!” moments in this unit and it is a great foundation skill the kids will always use. SCIENCE Sound and Light, Oh My! This week we are gathering KLEWS (science version of CLUES) to find out what we Know, want to L, what Evidence we want to gather, and Science terms learned from our Sound and Light unit. SOCIAL STUDIES This time of year it is all about Traditions! Traditions! Traditions!

If you cannot provide a snack, let me know so I can have a stash for your child. Parent Volunteers I welcome parents to volunteer at any capacity in or out of the classroom. Please let me know a day in advance if you would like to come into the classroom. CPS requests that you complete the Volunteer Process. You can locate the forms on the Ray School website under “Parents & Teachers” and then click on “Volunteer” or stop by the school office. Please complete this at your earliest convenience so that your volunteer opportunities are not limited and/or you cannot be a field trip chaperone. As the school year progresses, there will be more opportunities to work closely with students and less classroom prep. *This week in: READING Our book of the week is Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. As I reflect on our first week of school, I am pleased and impressed with how well the students are transitioning into a new grade and a new teacher! I will be providing you with a brief, daily email called “What Did You Do Today?” starting on Monday, September 12th. The purpose of this email is to share with you what your child has done in class that day. Most often, this question is posed to your child and the response is “nothing.” Well, I am here to tell you, 1st grade is bustling with activity and learning! We are in second week of school together, and we have many exciting things planned so please read on! Story of the week: Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. Vocabulary of the week: stamina, fret, ointment, sob, contagious (try using these in every day language) Classroom Responsibilities in full swing! This week, we began our classroom jobs. Ask your child to describe their classroom responsibility. Your child will hold the job for the week. Jobs will be rotated weekly. Reading Launching Daily 5 Reading Management (Reading Centers)! Starting with building our reading stamina by Reading to Self and working our way to buddy reading later this week. Writing Identifying types of writing and why people write. We are emphasizing writing “from the heart” and writing your own story and not someone else’s. Also, we are identifying strategies to write smarter, longer, and independently. In other words, stretching out the sounds in words, using an alphabet chart, using spelling patterns of known words to write new words. Math We will be discussing various ways to collect and organize data using tally marks, sorting, etc. Science Our investigation into Earth & Space will begin this week. Social Studies Social Emotional building through guided inquiry of ourselves and each other using wonderopolis.com and Family curriculum. Dear Room 112 Families, Sept 6, 2016
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. . We are in first week of school together, and I am enjoying getting to know your child very much! Most of all, I’m enjoying watching your children make new friends and build community in our classroom. Please complete all of the district paperwork, as well as, the various parent / student / technology inventories & surveys that went home this week. This gives me a lot of insight into how I can best communicate with you, as parents, and what expectations you have of your child in first grade. We are making adjustments to meet those needs. Classroom Responsibilities Next week, we will begin our classroom jobs. Your child will hold the job for the week. Jobs will be rotated weekly. Specials We will have Gym Tuesday and Thursdays and Art on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. H.E.R.O Folders Thank you for your patience as I put together your child's H.E.R.O folders. The folders will consist of our monthly school calendar, classroom weekly newsletter (Woodbury Weekly), our class schedule, a parent/teacher communication log, your child’s weekly spelling words, sight word practice suggestions, a personal word wall, and a pencil pouch to store work tools. Please look through the folder daily for homework, notes from me, and/or letters from the school. Behavior, Rules and Consequences This week, we will continue to learn, reflect on and practice the rules at school. In order for us to have a positive learning experience we all have to follow the rules in class. If your child is struggling with any of these areas, please work on these rules at home. Appropriate behavior is expected at all times; in the classroom, hallways, lunchroom and everywhere else in the building. In the case that your child breaks a rule, they will be given chances to correct their behavior before consequences are given. In extreme situations (ex. child is harming themselves or others and/or are disrupting learning); they will be sent to the office with a discipline referral. Snack Please bring your own, individually wrapped snack every day. For the purposes of allergies, classroom storage, and cleanliness, I will not be setting up a snack schedule. A few reminders for the week:
THIS WEEK IN: WORD STUDY Students will be doing sorting activities throughout the week in their word study notebooks to prepare for their spelling test on Friday. Please keep their word list / parent letter in their take – home folders as it contains their individual sight words I test them on every Friday. READER’S WORKSHOP Students will be introduced to Reading Workstation activities throughout this week. They are excited! WRITER’S WORKSHOP We will be immersing ourselves in informational writing texts in order to successfully write our own. We will be reading, noticing, thinking, and enjoying this genre of writing by looking through a wide variety of texts, including books and magazines. We are going to start thinking about what we are experts in – similar to “How – To” books. We will ask ourselves “How do writers share what they know?” We will learn the basic elements of non-fiction writing such as glossary, index, table of contents, diagrams, labels, etc. MATH We are mid-year into the First Grade Everyday Mathematics. I will be administering the mid-year assessment this week in small groups during math workstations to assess children’s mastery of some of the key concepts and skills learned today. We will begin Unit 5 this week. Children begin to use larger numbers and explore place value. They learn that the digits in a 2-digit number represent the number of tens and ones. For example, in the number 72, 7 is in the tens place and has a value of 7 tens, or 70; 2 is in the ones place and has a value of 2 ones, or 2. Children use base-10 blocks to represent numbers and to demonstrate their understanding of place value by exchanging 10 ones for 1 ten, and vice versa. SCIENCE In Science, we will be exploring light and sound and making kazoos! SOCIAL STUDIES Students are learning about the past and how people’s friendly acts and acts of courage have contributed / impacted families today. If you read until the end, remind your child to whisper in my ear “green brain buck.;)” Dear Room 112 Families, January 19, 2016 wk 18 issue 18

Happy New Year! While it can be difficult coming back after a two week holiday break, in which the holidays were hyped up, I love this time of year because students gain maturity and mastery. Also, it is a time to look forward to what we are going to accomplish over the next three months or so until Spring Break. This week is a light week academically. For the most part, it is the same routines and fun reviews to help students transition smoothly. A few reminders for the week: · All field trip slips have been returned. Thank You! An exact date is TBD. · No school 1/18/16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. · We have January birthdays and will have a celebration the last Friday of this month! We are only $340 away from getting an ipad and document camera for the classroom. A contribution of $10 would get us there! Here is the link: http://www.digitalwish.com/dw/digitalwish/view_fundraiser?id=1466 I am humbled by the donations received, thus far. THANK YOU!
