Dear Room 112 Families, January 25, 2016 wk 19 issue 19
A few reminders for the week:
THIS WEEK IN: WORD STUDY Students will be doing sorting activities throughout the week in their word study notebooks to prepare for their spelling test on Friday. Please keep their word list / parent letter in their take – home folders as it contains their individual sight words I test them on every Friday. READER’S WORKSHOP Students will be introduced to Reading Workstation activities throughout this week. They are excited! WRITER’S WORKSHOP We will be immersing ourselves in informational writing texts in order to successfully write our own. We will be reading, noticing, thinking, and enjoying this genre of writing by looking through a wide variety of texts, including books and magazines. We are going to start thinking about what we are experts in – similar to “How – To” books. We will ask ourselves “How do writers share what they know?” We will learn the basic elements of non-fiction writing such as glossary, index, table of contents, diagrams, labels, etc. MATH We are mid-year into the First Grade Everyday Mathematics. I will be administering the mid-year assessment this week in small groups during math workstations to assess children’s mastery of some of the key concepts and skills learned today. We will begin Unit 5 this week. Children begin to use larger numbers and explore place value. They learn that the digits in a 2-digit number represent the number of tens and ones. For example, in the number 72, 7 is in the tens place and has a value of 7 tens, or 70; 2 is in the ones place and has a value of 2 ones, or 2. Children use base-10 blocks to represent numbers and to demonstrate their understanding of place value by exchanging 10 ones for 1 ten, and vice versa. SCIENCE In Science, we will be exploring light and sound and making kazoos! SOCIAL STUDIES Students are learning about the past and how people’s friendly acts and acts of courage have contributed / impacted families today. If you read until the end, remind your child to whisper in my ear “green brain buck.;)”

Happy New Year! While it can be difficult coming back after a two week holiday break, in which the holidays were hyped up, I love this time of year because students gain maturity and mastery. Also, it is a time to look forward to what we are going to accomplish over the next three months or so until Spring Break. This week is a light week academically. For the most part, it is the same routines and fun reviews to help students transition smoothly. A few reminders for the week: · All field trip slips have been returned. Thank You! An exact date is TBD. · No school 1/18/16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. · We have January birthdays and will have a celebration the last Friday of this month! We are only $340 away from getting an ipad and document camera for the classroom. A contribution of $10 would get us there! Here is the link: http://www.digitalwish.com/dw/digitalwish/view_fundraiser?id=1466 I am humbled by the donations received, thus far. THANK YOU!
