We have two full weeks and two days left of school (12 days!). Students are coming home with a survey for to complete about me. I would greatly appreciate your candid feedback. Also, students will start bringing home science journals, writing folders, completed student math journals, and hero folders. I recommend keeping some of these materials and using them throughout the summer as a review. A few reminders:
THIS WEEK IN: WORD STUDY Students have created their own spelling list and are working with their self-selected words daily during Reading Centers. NO MORE SPELLING TESTS. READER’S WORKSHOP Our reading skills and our desire to read has skyrocketed! Students are given every opportunity to read, read, read! VOCABULARY OF THE WEEK: opposed, inquire, extravagant, squabble, WRITER’S WORKSHOP Completed our Persuasive Writing Unit. Now, we are using everything we learned in Writing as we do end of year activities. MATH We are done with First Grade Everyday Math. We are now using all the strategies we learned to do different activities. SOCIAL STUDIES We continue to learn about families around the world. Woah! Way to go Mrs. Woodbury’s Firties! Thanks to your family and friends, our class alone reached and exceeded our goal of raising over $2,000! We celebrated with a pizza and movie party last Friday. Great work everyone! The walk-a-thon happened while rainy and windy outside so teachers did not get to take pictures. Our second recess fundraiser, the Ray School Walk-A-Thon, is this Friday, May 19th from 10:15 – 10:45. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to allow us to have full staff for recess this school year. Without full recess staff, we would have even less (and less consistent) recess coverage. Please come prepared to be outside and active (hat, sunscreen, water bottle, loose/cool clothing) Reminders:

Well the weather has dipped but Mrs. Woodbury’s class is RISING!!!!! Our attendance for May is above 96%, our class is in 2nd place in raising money for the Walk-A-Thon, and students are turning in their field trip forms/money in record time! Whooohoooooo!!!! Reminders:

Happy May Day! PLEASE NOTE: On May 19th, we will host our second recess fundraiser! Please register your child. The $25,000 raised allows us to have full staff for recess. Without the fundraiser, we would have even less (and less consistent) coverage. This could negatively impact your child’s cherished time of the school day. Raise $50 this week, and be in a drawing to earn White Sox tickets with a parking pass! Persuasive writing is always a fun one for first grade. This week, we are exploring samples of persuasive writing and planning our own persuasive writing pieces. MATH This is our last week on Unit 7. Students are working really hard to master their math facts, doubles facts, and strategies for solving double digit addition and subtraction. Their mental math is improving, as well. Ask them about the game, Beat the Calculator! SCIENCE Our next unit will be plants and animals. Just in time for Spring! We will begin planting grass seeds after Spring Break. In the meantime, we will do some STEM class challenges to further develop our inquiry and collaboration skills that are so important in Science. Happy Spring! The weather will be changing and layers are highly recommended. Students will be wanting to go to recess without coats on and we will be enforcing them to wear what they were sent to school in by their parents/guardians. Now, they will be writing a second book giving their opinion on the best part of themselves (physical part) and why based on what they learned. MATH We began Unit 7 and are halfway through the unit. Math vocabulary such as addend, attribute, trait, fact families, and mental math are being practiced. SCIENCE In Science, we have been exploring light. This week, we are creating light systems using a target, a light beam, and mirrors to demonstrate how we use light to communicate. SOCIAL STUDIES Students are learning about their family’s past and how it is different from today. January has come and gone in the blink of an eye! Thank you for all your support and flexibility as we overcome sicknesses, and catch up from Teacher and student absences. Students will dig deeper into the text through each reading. We will discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words, identify the setting, characters and story parts in the text. Most importantly, we will discuss character actions and how they affect the story’s outcome. VOCABULARY OF THE WEEK: frazzled, spree, dazed, chaos, havoc, quest, queried, gawk SIGHT WORDS OF THE WEEK: Individualized list in your child’s folder. Please make sure they can read them and spell them correctly for the test. WRITER’S WORKSHOP We are nearing the end of our How-To writing books. We will have an Author Celebration this Thursday, February 2nd. MATH In Math, we started our number scrolls. Kids love them! We are discussing comprehension symbols, and using place value to help with two digit addition and subtraction. SCIENCE Students are recognizing different pitch and gathering information from different levels of sound/vibrations. SOCIAL STUDIES We continue to explore traditions with an Author study of Patricia Polacco. Q3 will bring us to study traditions then and now as well as explore ancestors. Happy December! What a nice snowfall to bring in the first weekend in December! The snow sure helped me get into the holiday spirit. December can be a crazy month, but also loads of fun; school celebrations and those with family and friends. Make sure to spend time taking care of yourselves, and getting quiet time with all the busyness. THIS WEEK IN: WORD STUDY Students started sorting activities throughout the week in their word study notebooks to prepare for their spelling test on Friday. READER’S WORKSHOP This week we will read Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Also, students will be exposed to procedural how-to writing with this first mentor text. Students will dig deeper into the text through each reading. We will discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words, identify the setting, characters and story parts in the text. Most importantly, we will discuss character actions and how they affect the story’s outcome. VOCABULARY OF THE WEEK: scold, mistake, invisible, plain, enormous SIGHT WORDS OF THE WEEK: Individualized list in your child’s folder. Please make sure they can read them and spell them correctly for the test. WRITER’S WORKSHOP We will kick off Unit 3: Writing How-To books with the class making trail mix! MATH In Math, we are focusing on length, addition facts using “doubles” and “helper doubles.” Personally, I enjoy this unit very much. There are many “Aha!” moments in this unit and it is a great foundation skill the kids will always use. SCIENCE Sound and Light, Oh My! This week we are gathering KLEWS (science version of CLUES) to find out what we Know, want to L, what Evidence we want to gather, and Science terms learned from our Sound and Light unit. SOCIAL STUDIES This time of year it is all about Traditions! Traditions! Traditions! We will discuss the ways that different people celebrate different holidays. We do not stress the religious meaning of any holiday, but highlight some of the non-religious ideas and some of the fun ways in which these holidays are celebrated. We will emphasize the happiness and traditions of the December holidays. If you wish, as a parent, to come to school and share your special day, celebration, ritual or food with the class, WE WOULD LOVE IT! |
